Isn't the NHS supposed to be free?

The NHS provides most health care to most people free of charge but there are exceptions such as prescription charges which have existed since 1951. The charge is made because the cost of the service is not covered under the NHS, such as medical reports for insurance companies.

The Government's contract with the GP covers medical services to NHS patients. Organisations such as insurance companies involve GPs in non-medical work because they are in a position of trust in the community or because an employer wants to be sure that the information provided is true.
